| THE FAO : The United Nations (UN) was started in 1945 at the end of the Second World War in order to try to prevent wars and to develop friendship between the countries of the world. Today, the UN has many different organisations which help to solve the world’s many problems. One of these organizations is the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). It works with the governments of many developing countries to reduce hunger, improve food production and distribution and improve also the lives of people in agricultural areas. Most people who live in richer countries know where their next meal is coming from, but throughout the world there are about 950 million people who don’t. These people, who live mostly in Africa and Asia, don’t get enough food to enable them to work properly. Although these statistics are very worrying, the situation has improved a lot over recent years thanks to the work of the FAO. Food production around the world has increased by 300% since the 1950s. This is not because more land is used for agriculture but because improved farming methods have resulted in increased agricultural production. Better fertlisers, better pesticides and better irrigation systems have helped to boost food production. So, why is there still so much hunger in the world? The reason for this is that most of the world’s food is eaten by people who don’t need it. Although 80% of the world’s population lives in the developing world, they eat only 30% of the world’s produce. According to the FAO, the world produces enough food to feed everyone, but hunger will continue until the food is distributed more fairly.
